Adults Can Rock Too!

Hey OC Moms! Do you harbor a love of music? This is the year to cultivate those dreams and turn them into adventure and self-love! Our friends at School of Rock Huntington Beach have a program specifically for adults and we’re so excited that they’ve agreed to share more about it here.

Conventional wisdom may say that learning to play a musical instrument is often easier in childhood, but that fact doesn’t stop many adults from harboring the desire to learn an instrument.

Whether it’s for personal satisfaction, creative expression, or simply as a challenge, while the rewards of learning music later in life are numerous, the learning process can come with unique challenges.

Adults can have obvious obstacles to learning something new, like time constraints making it a challenge to focus and practice. Even when adults do find the time, they may feel guilty about taking time for themselves, especially if it means diverting attention from family.

Then there are the physical limitations, such as developing new fine motor skills, dexterity, and muscle memory, that can take longer to develop than in a child.

And then of course there are the mental barriers that we as adults put on ourselves. Maybe you believe it’s too late” to learn an instrument, or you fear what others might think of you, especially during the early stages of learning when progress feels slow and challenging.

For the last 10 years the School of Rock Huntington Beach’s thriving adult program has recognized the unique challenges adult learners face and mitigated these obstacles.

First, flexible scheduling is one of the biggest advantages of taking lessons at School of Rock Huntington Beach. Our adult students have flexible options including evening, weekend, and even online classes that fit their busy schedules. This flexibility makes it easier to commit to your musical education without having to sacrifice work, family, or other obligations.

Whether you’re interested in learning guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, or vocals, School of Rock Huntington Beach instructors design lessons around the student’s goals and skill level. Unlike generic online tutorials, our personalized approach addresses any challenges the adult learner faces, such as learning at a slower pace, needing more time to develop motor skills, or focusing on specific songs and techniques that motivate them.

Most importantly, our supportive, non-judgmental environment is crucial in helping adults who often feel more self-conscious than children when learning an instrument.  Our teachers understand the challenges that come with adult learning, and they work patiently with students to help them overcome any self-doubt or frustration.

But the most unique feature of School of Rock Huntington Beach is our emphasis on performance-based learning. For our adult students who are a little more adventurous, rather than merely focusing on theory or technical exercises, students are encouraged to perform live. Our adult performance group and adult Rock 101 classes offer the students the benefit of playing in a band with fellow students which fosters a sense of community and camaraderie, which can be especially motivating.

Adult Performance program students showcase what they’ve learned in front of an audience at our quarterly performance program shows. These performances give adult students a sense of accomplishment, boost their confidence, and provide a real-world application of their practice.

So, whether you want to be a rock ‘n roll star, or just want to be proficient on an instrument, School of Rock Huntington Beach adult students get the tools they need to succeed and thrive as musicians.
