An Honest Letter To All Moms On Mother’s Day

0

Dear Moms,

Our day is almost here. Have you decided what you want to do? I mean, what you REALLY want to do. Have you told your family?

Wikipedia‘s Mother’s Day definition is:

…a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.

Merriam-Webster defines Mother’s Day as:

…the second Sunday in May appointed for the honoring of mothers.

Urban Dictionary calls it:

The day when your mother can use guilt against you to do whatever she wants.

But whichever Mother’s Day definition you choose, is it really about us?

If the day is focused on our family showing us how much they love us, isn’t it still just about them? Mother’s Day usually consists of brunch with your family. We’re talking grandmothers and mothers-in-law, as well. Let’s be honest, there is nothing relaxing about brunch with your family, no matter how much you enjoy them all the other days. Do you really want to be chasing your kids around while trying to enjoy your “day off?”

Don’t you want to an actual break?

Think about how much you enjoy going to Target by yourself. Now imagine that being a whole day doing anything you want. Maybe enjoying that same brunch but with friends instead. Amazing.

I love spending time with my family but I also appreciate my sanity. I am a much better wife and mom when I feel recharged. Face it, we all are.

Don’t know what to do? Here are some ideas:

  • Do absolutely anything by yourself
  • Go absolutely anywhere by yourself
  • Do absolutely anything or go absolutely anywhere with some mom friends. It’s important that they are mom friends so you can bond in solidarity.

Whatever it is, make it about you.

It’s going to be okay. Don’t let the mom guilt kick in. Or even the wife guilt (you know it exists). Your family can get along without you for a full day. Your husband can handle your kids. In fact, your husband may try to infiltrate on your day. Don’t let him. That’s called a date and he can plan that with you at another time.

Don’t get me wrong, you can still give over your morning to breakfast made by your loved ones and extra long morning cuddles. You could potentially even make it home for a nice dinner prepared just for you

The point is, you spend all the other days of the year putting others needs before your own. I think your family will understand when you tell them you want to do a little something just for you. It’s a great example for your kids to see that you give yourself that time so that you aren’t always stressed out.

Show your family that you care about them so much that you have to take a day for yourself.

Sounds like a funny statement but it’s so true. You can make your own Mother’s Day definition because it’s your day to choose.

As for me, I’ll be celebrating my son’s 3rd birthday because while I firmly believe everything I just said, I also acknowledge that he is the reason I even get to celebrate Mother’s Day. So I choose to make it his day this year.

Whatever you decide to do this weekend, wishing you a happy and relaxing Mother’s Day!
