Favorite Non-Toxic Fall Fragrances to Freshen up Your Home Naturally

Although it’s hard to believe with the warm, sunny weather we’ve been having, Autumn is upon us. The mornings and evenings are getting cooler, and soon the days will follow. There is something about the season of pumpkin lattes, cute boots, cozy sweaters, and crisp air that makes me want to light a candle and curl up on the couch. Fall also means lots of family gatherings, and if we’re hosting, we want our homes to smell fresh, and evoke the feeling of the season. There is nothing like a warm, spice-scented candle to set the mood.

But did you know that many candles contain chemicals considered to be carcinogens and endocrine disruptors? Had you mentioned this to me a few years ago, I wouldn’t have paid as much attention. But at 38, with a recent diagnosis of borderline Hypothyroid, I’m taking a closer look at my personal care and home products to see if they may be wreaking havoc on my hormones.

Not ready to give up this beloved fall ritual? You don’t have to! With these tips, you can find non-toxic fall fragrances and natural scents that smell like pumpkin spice yet the ingredients are everything nice. So you can have your candle and burn it too!

Favorite Non-Toxic Fall Fragrances to Freshen up Your Home Naturally:

Embrace Essential Oils

When it comes to candles or other home fragrances, hard pass on anything with phthalates in their ingredient list. Unfortunately it may not be that simple though. Many companies don’t list the ingredients that give their candle its scent. Instead, because the FDA does not regulate fragrances in home and personal care products, they can simply state “fragrance.”

“Fragrances” are often synthetic chemicals that can disrupt hormones.

To be safe, look for candles and scents derived from 100 percent essential oils. An even better option is diffusing essential oils on their own. If you’re looking for some non-toxic fall fragrances, try one of the following essential oils:

  • Nutmeg
  • Cinnamon
  • Cedarwood
  • Cardamom
  • Bergamot

Choose Clean-Burning Candles

When purchasing candles, it is not just the fragrance we need to be mindful of. Make sure to pass on paraffin wax. Paraffin is a known petroleum byproduct and comes from crude oil, which is a finite resource.

A safer and more sustainable option is a vegetable-based wax like soy or coconut.  Beeswax candles are a natural and renewable option as well.
