Being a working mom is a juggling act, requiring a delicate balance between career and family responsibilities. Throw in being a single mom on top of that and some of us are navigating what equates to two full-time jobs.
It’s easy for busy moms to feel overwhelmed and stretched thin. I mean, let’s just call it like it is – we feel overwhelmed because we’re IN OVERWHELMING CIRCUMSTANCES. Naming it is step one. Now that we’ve done that, I’m going to offer you some of the tips I’ve had to figure out from the ground up.
1. Prioritize Self-Care:
It’s not selfish; it’s necessary. Make time for yourself, even if it’s just a few minutes each day. Read a book, go for a walk, take a yoga class, sit on the front porch with a coffee or glass of wine, or meet friends for lunch. Taking care of your mental and physical well-being will help you recharge and face the rest of your life with a clearer mind.
2. Time Management:
Time is a precious resource for those of us juggling work and family. Experiement with time management techniques to make the most of your day and find one that works for you. Prioritize tasks, set realistic goals, and use tools such as calendars or productivity apps to stay organized. Consider batching similar tasks together to minimize context switching and boost productivity.
3. Establish Boundaries:
Learning to say no is a powerful skill for working moms. Set clear boundaries at work and at home to avoid spreading yourself too thin. Communicate openly about your priorities and valid limitations. Toss out the normalized idea that you should be able to show up to everything for everyone all the time. Repeat after me: I AM A HUMAN BEING WITH LIMITS. Honor them.
4. Delegate and Outsource:
You don’t have to do it all on your own. Delegate tasks at work and enlist the help of family members or a mother’s helper for household chores. Do what it takes to free time and energy where you can so you can focus on the things that truly require your attention.
5. Lean On A Support System:
Building a strong support system is crucial for busy working moms. Surround yourself with understanding friends, family, and colleagues who can offer advice or a listening ear when needed. Share responsibilities with your partner and involve your children in age-appropriate tasks to cultivate a sense of teamwork.
6. Embrace Imperfection:
Perfection is an unattainable goal, and striving for it only leads to stress and burnout. Honeeeeyyy, please accept that it’s okay not to have everything under control all the time. Give yourself grace and celebrate the small victories. Being a working mom is an incredible balancing act that deserves some grace.
7. Go With the Flow:
Even routines need to stay flexible and fluid in order to thrive. Having structure to our days can help us juggle everything we have going on in our lives, but only if we hold it all with an open hand. I love the quote from Mark Nepo: “Be more like water, less like ice.” The idea is that a tree falling into a frozen river will shatter the ice and get stuck where it lands. But a tree falling into moving water will be carried downstream by the strength of the water. Stay fluid, mamas. It is the best way to keep the flow of your life moving.
